THE LORD OF THE RINGS by J. R. R. Tolkien. New York: Ace Books; 1st paperback edition (unauthorized), 1st printings 1965. Cover and interior art by Jack Gaughan. A solid very good original single owner set of these 'Pirate' editions. Condition notes as follows: The Fellowship of the Ring (Ace A4) is in good to very good condition. Reasonably square spine, shiny cover with crease and light rubbing to top fore edge corner. Spine has binding creases, not reading creases, with a couple of small rubs. Rear cover is very nice with only a touch of rubbing to top corner. The text block looks like it has loose pages, as some of the pages stick out from the fore edge, however this is a binding error as can be seen from the images, the book is fully readable. The text block is firmly bound and has expected toning to the edges. The Two Towers (Ace A5) is in VG condition. Square spine, shiny cover with a little edge wear. Spine has binding creases, not reading creases, with a single small rub. Rear cover is very nice with only a couple of non-colour break creases to top corner. The text block is firmly bound and has expected toning to the edges. The Return of the King is in VG condition. Is reasonably square, with a shiny cover that shows some edge wear. The front cover has creasing to the top corner. The spine has some curve, with a non colour break reading crease, and rubs to head and foot. Rear cover also has a couple of non-colour break creases to top corner, and general edge wear. The text block is firmly bound and has expected toning to the edges. There is a section of about 8 pages that have turned corners. Note we do not use stock images, the books pictured are the books described. This set of books is known as the pirate edition published without authorisation by Ace in 1965. Tolkien famously did all he could to prevent the sale and distribution of these and eventually made small amendments to the text to reassert his copyright in the USA, thus preventing further printings by Ace. Although these books were printed in quantity (and indeed created the Lord of the Rings market amongst the 60's "hippie" youth of the USA) they are getting tougher to find in decent readable condition. This set looks good on the shelf, and we bought it recently from a collector who purchased them at the time of publication in the USA when he lived there during the 1960's. Certainly a nice set for the Tolkien collector, due to the publication history and their increasing rarity, particularly in the UK
